This study considers the dialogic relationship between the 2017 Disney live-action film Beauty and the Beast with Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve’s fairy tale and Disney’s 1991 animated version. El estudio concluye una prevalencia del partidarismo LGTB y un debate ofensivo, discriminatorio y dogmático por parte de sus detractores. Seleccionamos cinco vídeos orientados a tales cuestiones, acotando una muestra de doscientos cincuenta comentarios cuyos resultados se derivan en la interpretación del mensaje-discurso de los usuarios en materia de afecto y consumo cultural infantil. De acuerdo con la revisión literaria, aplicamos una metodología cualitativa mediante análisis de contenidos enfocada a movimientos sociales en red con el objetivo de profundizar en el discurso sobre la diversidad sexual. Furthermore, powerful women who encroach on male authority but ultimately fail to upend the gender hierarchy trigger schadenfreude beyond that expected from their wrongdoings. Discomfort with the way in which magical powers were allegedly employed by these women echo historical fears of witches accused of appropriating male power. The purported ability to bewitch, in conjunction with the adoption of patterns associated with male dominance, suggest that Maleficent and Elizabeth Holmes wield power over men and wield the power of men. Both antagonists also engage in finger pricking that penetrates the skin and draws blood, acts associated with symbolic male potency. Elizabeth Holmes’ adoption of a deep voice and other masculine characteristics parallels Maleficent’s demeanor and appearance that signal female usurpation of traditional male power. An analysis of scenes featuring Maleficent, the “mistress of all evil”, and coverage of Elizabeth Holmes, once the first self-made female billionaire, illustrate how powerful women with hubris are censured beyond their misdeeds. Disney’s most popular animated villain, Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty (1959) and Elizabeth Holmes of the now-disgraced blood testing startup, Theranos, reveled in their power, deviating from idealized feminine propriety. Recommendations for future research regarding this topic are also made.įemale villains, both fictional and real, are subject to unconscious gender bias when part of their iniquity involves the disruption of male authority. From this study, it has been concluded that there is indeed the importance of explaining or discussing Disney films with children, as this not only helps a child learn, but also strengthens the bond between a parent and child. The results obtained from this questionnaire are discussed, as well as compared, to the existing literature and research studies concerning Disney and Disney films. In addition to this, parents have been able to highlight both positive and negative effects of Disney films to justify their beliefs and attitudes. ![]() Results revealed that in this study, Disney films are certainly prominent in children’s lives, and most parents believe that Disney films have an effect on children. Their answers were gathered and analysed through SPSS and the use of Thematic Analysis for the open-ended questions, as put forward by Braun and Clarke (2006). The sample study includes 238 responses of parents. Open-ended questions are also used in this questionnaire for a more in-depth analysis. This study takes on a quantitative approach through the use of online questionnaires. Parents’ beliefs on whether their own children have been influenced by Disney films was also investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of parents on the perceived effects that Disney films may have on children. ![]()
